◉◉◉ Machina's soul is one of the loci within Orience's overarching prophecy, with his harboring the throne of fear. The gods decided that his (along with 3 others) were no longer necessary, so they "cast out" these four. Except, these loci would continue to stick around, whether directly within the spiral or observing it. Canon is not 100% clear on how they remained, just that... the Nameless Tome says they did. This spiral has been going on for 600,104,972 revolutions; meaning that even though his soul had been abandoned by the divine, Machina has experienced these prior revolutions as well.
Canonpoint: Final "cycle", Post- "Capture of Togareth" mission.
Guild Choice: Wanderer's Guild. Since canonically he's a soldier, this guild might encourage him to choose his own path.
Element Choice:
1. Dark. Despite having an intensely caring heart deep down, in the current cycle, Machina abandons those he loves and betrays his fellow peers. He actively can and will fight against those very same peers in order to fulfill his goal, and if someone stands in his way, he will cut them down. Machina's soul, as the "loci/throne of fear", houses 600 million+ years of fear, anger, loss, and wrath, all of which has been unresolved. It festers within him, pushing him toward an extreme. Even in Dissidia, Machina's crystal element/color is dark, and he is associated with the antagonist's side for his deeds.
2. Light. Machina, in one cycle, once chose a path that involved not betraying those he loves... although he failed. The light exists! It's just very tiny.
3. Fire. Rubrum, the country for which Machina fights, is associated with the element of fire, as well as a phoenix rising from the ashes.
Canon Powers:
◉◉◉ Combat. Machina wields twin rapiers, and he has a few different abilities to supplement his combat. Here is a list. Machina's rapiers are stored in crystal hammerspace.
◉◉◉ Magic. Full list; at this canonpoint, Machina's magic only includes the basic Fire/Blizzard/Lightening/Cure-types.
◉◉◉ Summoning. Requires an actual sacrifice, either by giving a TON of life-powered magic, or literally death. Machina can sacrifice himself for the cause. If accepted, his 1 summon will be Bahamut.
◉◉◉ Phantoma gathering. Phantoma = soul/life-essence. Machina can extract their phantoma from their corpses within a given time frame. He can use this to replenish his magic if he needs it, or he can carry this essence to turn them in to enhance spells at the Altocrystarium. Naturally, the harvesting of the dead's phantoma isn't exactly boasted as an ability-- it literally involves taking a creature or human's soul before it passes on. Yikes.
Character Wish(es):
◉◉◉ 1. To save Rem.
◉◉◉ 2. To have the power to protect Rem.
Character Fear(s):
◉◉◉ Losing Rem. She is his childhood friend and his canon love interest.
◉◉◉ Being left behind/alone. This fear has always been boiling beneath the surface, given that the Crystal's Blessing in his world makes everyone forget the dead. But with more and more people gone from Machina's life, the more emptiness he feels, and the more dread builds within him, turning him desperate to keep those he loves alive.
◉◉◉ Being perceived as inferior/weak. In a world that plucks off soldiers who are incapable, Machina has fought hard to prove himself through battle and academics. Despite his accomplishments, he still feels inferior, and he internalizes each loss and mistake on his part to an unhealthy amount.
Strengths & Weaknesses:
◉◉◉ Strength: "star student". Canonically, Machina has excellent grades, and people like him for his talent. He is strong, knowledgeable, friendly, studious, understanding, and helpful to those in need. He shows the potential of becoming a leader. Coming from virtually nothing, he built himself into a soldier through work and study, eventually qualifying to become an Agito Cadet. In combat, he is determined, tenacious, and resilient. When not moody, he can be surprisingly sociable and encouraging. All around, he seems to be an upstanding young man... in early canon.
◉◉◉ Strength: protective. Dedicated to safeguarding Rubrum's people and those he loves, Machina stops at nothing to ensure others are safe. When war breaks and it comes to commanding in the field for sorties, he (like those of Class Zero) effectively executes his missions and leads others to victory. Having seen the horrors of war first hand, he abhors all aspects of it. Unfortunately, he greatly underestimates how he, too, is affected by the stress and strife of battle and loss.
◉◉◉ Weakness: desperation. This is tested when he is sorely outmatched by a l'Cie, the canon demigods. Machina will still make a comparison of his power as a mortal to that of an immortal l'Cie, expressing both awe and fear of their might, as well as a want to be able to be on par with them himself. He must achieve that power by any means; if not, he will fail in protecting Rem-- an unacceptable outcome. Until he obtains that power, he loathes himself for being weak and needing help.
◉◉◉ Weakness: fear. His goal to protect is eventually corrupted by fear, twisted by a desire for power. Eventually, Machina takes this want-to-protect to the absolute extreme. He does what he believes is needed, even if that means trading his humanity or turning against his allies. In late canon, this fear makes Machina excessively unstable, self-isolating, prone to manipulation, and volatile. He will often justify his methods/actions by saying that it's necessary, even if that means contradicting himself in the name of doing what he must (such as abandoning Rem to "protect" her). Nevermind that Rem never asks for Machina to do anything for her, Machina takes it upon himself to decide that this is what's best. Fear makes him both deaf and blind to those he loves, even when they attempt to help him.
